Nguyen Hoang Long, Vietnam’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, has been appointed Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry amidst a shortfall of high-ranking personnel at the ministry.

Long, 48, will take on the position for five years, starting from June 10, according to a prime ministerial decision signed off Tuesday.

Long, who holds a Ph.D. in economics, is a career diplomat. Before being appointed ambassador to the UK, Long was deputy head of the Department of Europe under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ambassador to Italy, and head of the ministry’s Department of Provincial Foreign Affairs.

Apart from Long, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has two deputy ministers: Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan and Phan Thi Thang.

Since December 2023, the ministry has had two deputy ministers, compared to five previously. Deputy Minister Dang Hoang An was appointed chairman of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) last July and his peer Tran Quoc Khanh retired in June. Do Thang Hai was arrested in December on charges of “accepting bribes” in an oil trading company scam.

At a Q&A session before the parliament on Tuesday, MoIT Minister Nguyen Hong Dien admitted that his ministry was struggling with a shortage of senior leaders and experienced personnel.
