Vietnam has new finance, transport ministers
The National Assembly, Vietnam's highest legislative body, on Thursday approved the Prime Minister's proposals to appoint Nguyen Van Thang as Minister of Finance and Tran Hong Minh as Minister of Transport for the 2021-2026 term.
The appointments received the votes in favor of all 452 parliament members present in the session, equivalent to 94.36% of the total number of lawmakers.
Earlier, the legislature okayed the Prime Minister's proposals to relieve Ho Duc Phoc and Nguyen Van Thang from the posts of Minister of Finance and Minister of Transport, respectively, for the 2021-2026 tenure.
Thang, born in 1973 in Hanoi’s Nam Tu Liem district, holds a doctorate in monetary theory and finance. He spent a long time in Vietnam’s banking sector. Thang used to be CEO and chairman of VietinBank, one of the state-controlled Big 4 banks.
In July 2018, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh province and later became the province's Party chief and Chairman.
Thang was Party chief of Dien Bien province from October 2020 to November 2022, when he was appointed as Minister of Transport. As the new Minister of Finance, he replaced Ho Duc Phoc, who had been promoted to Deputy Prime Minister.
Tran Hong Minh, born in 1967, replaces Thang to be Minister of Transport. He holds a master's degree in civil engineering and a doctorate in roads, foundations, and underground structures. Minh is currently a member of the Central Party Committee and the National Assembly.
From September 2021 to November 28, 2024, Minh was Party chief of Cao Bang province.
