Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) to join the railway project linking the two nations, with an aim to start the construction in 2025.

Chinh made the statement at a Wednesday meeting with CRCC's leadership in Kunming, Yunnan province, on the sidelines of his China trip to attend the eighth Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Summit and other events.

The Kunming-Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway is set to connect China’s Kunming with Vietnam’s to-be-built Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway.

The project will strengthen the Vietnam-China partnership per the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the “Two Corridors, One Belt” initiative, Chinh highlighted. The route can shorten Kunming’s path to the sea and help the socioeconomic growth of Vietnam’s northern border region.

Emphasizing the target of kicking off the Vietnam section in 2025, Chinh said Vietnamese authorities would proceed with administrative procedures as soon as possible.

He also suggested CRCC join other key traffic projects of Vietnam, including the Hanoi-Lang Son railway, Mong Cai-Ha Long-Hai Phong railway, North-South high-speed railway, and border expressways linking Vietnam-China.

The government chief called on CRCC to help Vietnam’s railway sector with finance, administration, technology transfer, and workforce training.

In response, CRCC chairman Dai Hegen said the corporation currently focuses on some projects in Vietnam, including the Kunming-Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway and North-South high-speed railway. Its other targets in the Southeast Asian country include expressways, urban railway (metro), and infrastructure.
