Vietnam should facilitate foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs), especially electronics giants like Samsung, LG and Intel, to conduct on-the-job training to bolster the country's digitalization and green transformation progress.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang made the statement at the DX Vietnam-Asia Summit 2024 on Tuesday, which focused on human resources solutions to speed up Vietnam's digitalization and green transformation.

Quang highlighted that many foreign businesses entering Vietnam have a key focus on human resources, especially high-quality workforce, and not on land leases anymore.

The northern coastal city of Hai Phong is a top destination for FDI thanks to its abundance of high-quality laborers, he noted. Quang used to be chief of Hai Phong's Party Committee.

As learning is not the same as working, the optimal solution is to facilitate businesses to embrace on-the-job training, he added while referring to Vietnam's target of training 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030.

He also noted solutions to improve society's understanding of digitalization-green transformation, investment in digital infrastructure, investment from non-state capital sources, encouragement for enterprises and startups, and utilization of global achievements in the sector.

The government leader also outlined some challenges, including society's unawareness of digitalization-green transformation, lacklustre legal framework and infrastructure, and limited investment.

Many global tech majors have shown keen investment interest in Vietnam’s electronics and semiconductor industries, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung said earlier this month. "International businesses and organizations continue to appreciate Vietnam's growth prospects," he told a regular cabinet meeting.
