Vietnam urges Doosan to invest in offshore wind power
Doosan Vina, under South Korean giant Doosan Enerbility, should expand its business in Vietnam to new sectors such as offshore wind power, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh told the company's CEO.
Binh made the suggestion at a Wednesday meeting with Kim Hyo Tae, CEO of Doosan Vina. Offshore wind power in Vietnam has a huge potential and Vietnam always facilitates operations of foreign businesses, including Doosan Vina, he added.
In reply, the executive said Doosan Vina is willing to expand its operations in Vietnam, including offshore wind power. He urged the Vietnamese government to support Doosan Vina in enlarging activities in the country.
Doosan Vina currently operates in designing and manufacturing modules for cranes, oil-gas activities, and seaport equipment. The firm directly employs 1,500 people and its contractors employ 1,500 others.
Vietnam currently has no offshore wind power project, however its offshore wind power equipment is thriving. In October 2024, the report "Offshore wind supply chain for fast-track scenario in Vietnam" pointed out that the country has strong fundamentals to localize key components of offshore wind projects.
The existing supply chain used by the domestic oil and gas industry, in conjunction with the current onshore and nearshore wind infrastructure, has the potential to support in-country offshore wind developments, particularly foundation, tower manufacturing and maritime infrastructure, according to the report delivered from the Norwegian Embassy to Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade.
In November 2024, Petrovietnam Technical Services Corp (PTSC), the technical arm of Vietnam’s state-owned Petrovietnam, kicked off the construction of substation platforms for the 1.5-GW Baltica 2 offshore wind power project. Baltica 2 is part of the 2.5 GW Baltica Offshore Wind Farm, jointly developed by Denmark’s Orsted and Poland’s Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE).
In December 2024, Petrovietnam delivered 33 offshore windfarm foundations to Orsted, serving the Danish offshore wind power developer’s 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b&4 project offshore Taiwan.
