Can Tho city on Wednesday gave an in-principle nod to Vietnamese firm Hoa Lam Group and Japan-invested Aeon Mall Vietnam Co. Ltd. to build a mall.

Can Tho Chairman Tran Viet Truong handed the document over to Hoa Lam and Aeon Mall Vietnam in Tokyo on the sidelines of Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man’s working session with the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren).

At a meeting with Aeon Mall Co. Ltd., Man lauded the retailer’s investments in Vietnam. The parliament's top leader also emphasized that many other Vietnamese localities, including the northern province of Bac Ninh, are willing to cooperate with Aeon to open malls.

In response, Aeon Mall president Ohno Keiji said the retailer is willing to build more malls across Vietnam. Its latest opening was Aeon Mall Hue in the central province of Thua Thien Hue in September, a decade after the first one made its debut in Ho Chi Minh City.

Last month, Can Tho approved Hoa Lam Can Tho Investment Development JSC, a subsidiary of Hoa Lam Group, as investor of the Aeon Mall Can Tho commerce and service center.

The facility will cover 8.5 hectares in Long Hoa commune, Binh Thuy district. The firm will build the center at an estimated cost of VND5.4 trillion ($212.4 million), of which VND1.08 trillion will be sourced from the investor’s equity.

To date, there are seven Aeon outlets in Vietnam: two each in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; and one each in the southern province of Binh Duong, the northern city of Hai Phong and the central province of Thua Thien Hue. Of these, the latest to open is in Thua Thien Hue.

At the event with the Keidanren, the top legislative leader of Vietnam said the country is willing to cooperate with Japanese investors in the traffic sector, referring to the country’s $67-billion North-South high-speed railway project.

Vietnamese conglomerate Sovico and Japan's Marubeni reached a comprehensive agreement on investing in Vietnam, focusing on renewable energy, industrial real estate, logistics, and aviation.
