The Ninh Binh power plant in northern Vietnam's namesake province has undergone a holistic overhaul after 45 years of service, with equipment supplied by Shanghai Electric, a Chinese multinational power generation and electrical equipment manufacturing company.

With the upgrade, the output of each unit of the four steam turbines has increased from 25 MW to 27 MW, and the plant is expected to extend its operational lifespan by an additional 30 years.
The Ninh Binh power plant was constructed with support from China and officially entered operation in 1974 during the Vietnam War, becoming one of the primary power generators in the northern region.
When operating at full capacity, it is projected to produce around 800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
Ni Yuanpeng, director of the service department of industrial turbine division of Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment Co., Ltd. Turbine Plant, said his firm had provided numerous technical enhancements and transformation solutions, including extending the lifespan of equipment, upgrading control systems, implementing environmental improvements, and enhancing boiler co-firing capabilities.
As an exemplary project in the history of Vietnam's power industry, the plant has been instrumental in training a large number of professionals who have gone on to contribute to the construction of a host of power plants throughout Vietnam, including the Vinh Tan and Quang Ninh power plants, two other major projects in the country having Shanghai Electric involvement.
