Japan's Marubeni Corporation, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Marubeni Green Power Vietnam Co., Ltd, has begun operating a battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Vietnam.

The lithium-ion battery is located in Vietnam’s central coastal province of Khanh Hoa and has an output rate of 1.8 MW and a capacity of 3.7 MWh, Marubeni said Friday.

The project followed an MoU signed in May 2023 between Marubeni and Vingroup, a leading private conglomerate in Vietnam.

The BESS is installed and operated by Marubeni at a resort of Vinpearl, with its system developed and manufactured by VinFast.

Vinpearl and VinFast are hospitality and electric vehicle brands of Vingroup, respectively.

As the owner of the BESS, Marubeni will provide services to reduce electricity costs by charging and discharging the batteries, taking advantage of time-of-use electricity rate differentials.

This business model, which uses third-party investment in the BESS of this scale to reduce electricity costs, is one of the first of its kind in Vietnam, according to Marubeni.

Per its mid-term strategy, Marubeni aims to further strengthen its strategic partnership with Vingroup while developing new power services in Vietnam, contributing to a stable power supply for commercial and industrial consumers in the country.
