Ha Tinh authorities recently granted in-principle approval for the project and okayed Vinhomes Ha Tinh Industrial Park Investment JSC - a member of Vingroup - as investor.
The over 123-hectare project site is located in Vung Ang ward, formerly part of Ky Anh township. This includes roughly 36 hectares for port construction, 81 hectares of sea area, and over 5.6 hectares for connecting roads.
The project has a total investment of more than VND8.8 trillion ($333.8 million). It includes three wharves with a total length of 1,050 meters, capable of receiving 100,000-DWT general cargo and container vessels.
It will also feature warehouses, port service infrastructure, anchorage areas, channels, and turning basins. Its designed handling capacity is around 9.4-11.3 million tons per year.
The port will serve cargo handling, transportation, and storage needs for Ha Tinh and neighboring areas. Its operating period is 70 years from the date the investor receives the land allocation decision.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion and commissioning planned for Q2/2028, supporting economic activity, industrial parks, surrounding regions, and Laos.
Son Duong is one of the key deep-water ports in Ha Tinh province and the north-central region. It is planned alongside many major industrial projects and functions as a hub for receiving raw materials and transshipping international cargo.
With natural deep-water advantages, proximity to international shipping routes, and connections to the East-West economic corridor, the port is positioned as a foundation for Ha Tinh’s heavy industry, logistics, and seaport services, while expanding import-export gateways for neighboring provinces and Laos.
Vingroup has invested in many large projects in Ha Tinh. In late August 2023, the group's VinES electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in the Vung Ang Economic Zone began operations.
In late June 2025, VinFast, an EV manufacturing startup under Vingroup, inaugurated a factory in Vung Ang, its second in Vietnam after the one in Hai Phong city.
The appearance of Son Duong international port will strengthen Vingroup's industrial-logistics ecosystem in the region, creating a chain from production to export.
In the year to end-Q3/2025, Ha Tinh attracted 28 investment projects, including three FDI ones with total registered capital of over $14.4 million. Compared with the same period last year, the number of domestic projects rose 1.5 times, while total registered capital increased sevenfold.
