ASEAN discusses strategies to boost supply chain connectivity
A high-level forum on ASEAN Supply Chain Connectivity: "Key Issues and Challenges" was held in Vientiane, Laos on Mondat, with participants discussing the critical need to enhance integration amid evolving global challenges.
The forum, co-organized by the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), brought together government officials, experts, and business leaders from across the region, the Lao National Radio reported on Tuesday.
The discussions focussed on strategies to bolster regional cooperation in supply chain management, aligning with Laos' ASEAN chairmanship in 2024 under the theme of "ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience."
Speaking at the event, Lao Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaythong Kommasith highlighted the key factors impacting ASEAN's supply chains, including geopolitical changes, digital advancements, and the growing emphasis on sustainability.
He emphasized the need for stronger digital infrastructure and policy coordination to boost competitiveness in emerging sectors such as electric vehicles, semiconductors, and digital services. Enhancing the free flow of data and supporting the mobility of digital talent within ASEAN were also identified as priority areas for regional collaboration.
The minister called for the development of institutional mechanisms to safeguard supply chains from potential disruptions, including global health risks.
The event concluded with insights from a distinguished panel of experts, who stressed the importance of supply chain connectivity in driving ASEAN's long-term growth.
