The administration of Binh Dinh province in south-central Vietnam has announced it will proceed with a VND5.5 trillion ($230 million) investment plan to build a 150 MW wind power plant.

The plant will be located in Canh Lien commune, Van Canh district, an area with strong wind potential.

At the end of March, the provincial People's Committee and Singapore’s Nexif Ratch Energy SE Asia Pte., Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on investment in the Nexif Ratch Binh Dinh Wind Power Plant project.

Earlier, local authorities had permitted the Singaporean group to conduct wind potential assessments in an area of approximately 1,368 hectares in Van Canh district.

To facilitate the research and evaluation process, the company has been allowed to install one wind measurement tower in Canh Lien commune, covering about 100 square meters of land.

In addition to Nexif Ratch Energy, the people's committee has also authorized Nam Hai Technology Co., Ltd to install two wind measurement towers in Van Canh district.

These measurement areas cover about 2,253 hectares in Canh Lien Commune and 2,208 hectares in the communes of Canh Lien, Canh Hoa, and Canh Thuan. The wind assessment phase is scheduled to last for 18 months from the date of in-principle approval.

In October, Germany’s PNE AG, a leading developer of renewable energy projects, showed its determination to move ahead with a mega offshore wind power project in central Vietnam by opening a representative office there.

According to PNE, the project will be executed on Hon Trau island, 10 kilometers off the coast of De Gi estuary, 30 km from Phu Cat airport, and about 50 km from Quy Nhon town. It is designed to have a capacity of 2,000 MW and be implemented in three phases. Some 50 turbines are slated to be installed in each phase.
