Chan May port in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue launched a container route Sunday by welcoming a 1,577-TEU ship on the biweekly Hai Phong-Chan May-Ho Chi Minh City route.

The route, operated by local firm Hai An Transport and Stevedoring JSC, is the first domestic container route connecting Chan May Port.

The route will facilitate investment promotion and import-export activities of firms in Vietnam’s north-central province and Laos, developing the Chan May-Lang Co economic zone, said Thua Thien-Hue Vice Chairman Phan Quy Phuong at the ceremony on Sunday.

He asked the port to modernize its services and reduce logistical fees for businesses while affirming that relevant agencies of the province would facilitate firms to build Thua Thien-Hue into a logistical hub of the central region.

The Chan May deep-water port, a gateway to the Pacific Ocean, is expected to be able to handle ships of up to 70,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) in the coming time, build a transshipment area for 200,000 DWT vessels, construct a bonded warehouse, and a depot area, according to provincial authorities.

Currently, the seaport with an annual capacity of handling 3.5 million tons of bulk cargo per year can receive transportation ships of up to 50,000 DWT and container ships of up to 2,600 TEU.
