Chinese tech giant Huawei targets further 5G cooperation with VNPT and MobiFone, two state-controlled telecom giants in Vietnam, said vice president of Huawei Asia Pacific Zhengjun Zhang.

The executive made the proposal at a Wednesday meeting in Hanoi with leaders of the Commission for Management of State Capital at Enterprises (CMSC), VNPT, and MobiFone. In particular, Huawei aims to pilot 5G Proof of Concept (PoC) deployment with VNPT and MobiFone to test the efficiency and qualities of 5G services.

The Chinese heavyweight also targets to cooperate with the two Vietnamese corporations in human resources training and optimize 5G operations.

Huawei will also help the Vietnamese telcos in building 5G innovation centers for 5G-to-customers (5G2C) and 5G-to-businesses (5G2B) services; development and testing of new solutions; and workforce training, the executive said.

Based on the outcomes of 5G cooperation, Huawei aims to further cooperate with the CMSC, VNPT, and MobiFone in green energy, data center, and cloud computing. Huawei also seeks to help Vietnam with digitalization of the industrial sectors, he noted.

In reply, CMSC vice chairman Nguyen Ngoc Canh lauded Huawei’s developments and recent collaboration with VNPT and MobiFone. Backing Huawei’s suggestions, Canh asked the Chinese group to further help 5G growth in Vietnam via practical activities with VNPT and MobiFone.

Vietnam backs Huawei's activities

On the same day, Zhengjun Zhang had a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang. The executive expressed Huawei’s willingness to join in activities in Vietnam, including 5G development, digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI), green transformation.

Huawei started investing in Vietnam in 1998 and recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hanoi-headquartered Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology to train 10,000 information-technology (IT) staff in the next five years, Zhang said.

Huawei is cooperating with Vietnamese partners in deploying the first 5G innovation center in Vietnam, he added.

In reply, Tran Luu Quang welcomed Huawei’s activities in Vietnam and affirmed the Vietnamese government would support foreign investors, including Chinese ones, in digitalization, green transformation, telecommunications, and AI.
