Dinh Tien Dung, most recently Hanoi's Party chief, has stepped down from his current position as a member of the Politburo, the country’s most powerful decision-making body.

Dung’s resignation was approved by the Party Central Committee at a meeting in Hanoi on Friday, the committee said in a statement.

The move was made after the Central Inspection Commission concluded that during his 2016-2021 term as Secretary of the Ministry of Finance's Party Committee and Minister of Finance, Dung violated the code of conduct of Party members and working regulations, and showed lax responsibility.

Such violations led to wrongdoings at the ministry’s Party Committee, organizations and individuals, causing severe consequences and negative public opinion, and harming the credibility of Party organizations and state management agencies.

Being fully aware of his responsibilities, Dung submitted an application to quit all positions and retire.

Two days ago, the Politburo agreed to Dung’s request to step down from the posts of Hanoi's Party chief and head of the city’s National Assembly delegation.

Dung, 63, was appointed General Auditor of the State Audit in August 2011 before becoming Finance Minister for nearly two terms, from May 2013 to April 2021. In April 2021, he was appointed to head the capital’s Party Committee.

He is the seventh Politburo member to leave all positions since the start of the ongoing term, January 2021. The latest high-ranking politician to resign was Vuong Dinh Hue, from the post of Chairman of the National Assembly, the country’s highest legislative body.

The parliament chair is among the top four leadership positions, besides Party General Secretary, State President, and Prime Minister.

The Party Central Committee last month elected four additional members to the Politburo. With Dung’s resignation, the body now comprises 15 members.
