Hanoi deputy Party chief elected new city mayor
Hanoi's legislature body voted Tran Sy Thanh, deputy chief of the city's Party Committee, as the capital’s new mayor Friday.
The municipal People’s Council gave the 51-year-old a voting ratio of 100%.
The Vietnamese Politburo - the Party’s premier decision-making body - on July 15 appointed Thanh as Hanoi's Deputy Party Secretary from his post of State Auditor General. On the same day, the Politburo also recommended Thanh assume charge as the new mayor of Hanoi.
The recommendation followed the arrest of former Hanoi mayor Chu Ngoc Anh for his involvement in a Covid-19 test kit scam 38 days before.

Thanh holds a master's degree in economics and is a Party Central Committee member, tenures 12 and 13. He used to hold the positions of Deputy Chief of Office, Chief of Office, and Deputy General Director at the State Treasury under the Ministry of Finance.
From 2008, Thanh held various senior positions including Vice Chairman of Dak Lak province; a Party Central Inspection Commission member; Party chief of Bac Giang province; Vice Chairman of the Central Inspection Committee; and Party chief of Lang Son province.
At the end of 2017, he became deputy chief of the Central Economic Commission and chairman of oil and gas group Petrovietnam. In August 2020, Thanh was appointed deputy chairman of the National Assembly Office. Since April 2021, he had been the State Auditor General.
