Indonesia aims to optimize geothermal potential
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has said that the country should strive to optimize its geothermal resources which can generate about 24,000 megawatts of electricity.

Speaking at the Indonesia International Geothermal Convention and Exhibition 2024 (IIGCE) in Jakarta on Wednesday, President Widodo stressed that Indonesia is committed to being an important part of the world's steps in building a green economy, developing green industries, and making the transition to green energy.
However, the country has yet to make the most of its geothermal resources, he said, urging Indonesian ministries and agencies to streamline the process to obtain permits for constructing a geothermal power plant to fully capitalize on the country's vast geothermal potential.
Widodo noted his hope that the IIGCE will create a breakthrough, possibly becoming a forum for sharing risks, burdens and profits in equal proportions and allowing for immediate decision making.
IIGCE is an annual event organized by the Indonesian Geothermal Association (API).
Indonesia have signed a memorandums of understanding with New Zealand, Ireland, Kenya and state-owned enterprise partners to cooperate in renewing and conserving geothermal energy in Indonesia.
