Under the business registration certificate issued by the municipal Department of Planning and Investment, the joint venture was set up on December 20, 2024, with Hai Phong Port holding a 51% stake and Global Terminal Limited S.À.R.L the remaining 49%.
The CEO and legal representative of the new company is Ngo Trung Hieu, born in 1981.
Earlier, in July 2024, Hai Phong Port signed a joint venture agreement with Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), a subsidiary of the world’s largest shipping company MSC, to develop and operate the two container terminals in Lach Huyen.
TIL specializes in investing in and operating container terminals and is one of the largest and most geographically diverse container terminal operators in the world, managing over 70 ports in 31 countries across five continents.
It handles more than 62 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually and has a strategic presence at nine of the world’s 30 busiest ports, including Antwerp, Singapore, Long Beach, Ningbo, Newark, Valencia, Rotterdam, Busan, and Los Angeles.
The investment project for the construction of international container terminals 3 and 4 at the Hai Phong Gateway International Port was approved by the Prime Minister on October 9, 2019, with Hai Phong Port assigned as the project’s main investor.
The project includes the construction of two main terminals, each 750 meters long, one 150-meter-long barge berth, cargo storage areas, roadways, auxiliary structures, and synchronized technical infrastructure.
The terminals will accommodate vessels ranging from 8,000 to 14,000 TEUs, equivalent to 100,000 to 160,000 DWT, with a projected throughput of 1.1 million TEUs annually. The total investment for the project is nearly VND7 trillion ($300 million).
Construction of the project began in July 2022, and Hai Phong Port expects to start their operations in Q1/2025, with full completion within next year. Once operational, they are expected to become a key hub for shipping lines in the region and globally.
On December 20, 2024, three new STS gantry cranes made by Japan’s Mitsui E&S were delivered to terminals 3 and 4 at Lach Huyen Port. These cranes are part of a contract to supply and install six STS container cranes for the main berths and 24 RTG (Rubber-Tyred Gantry) cranes for the port. This equipment is essential for supporting the construction of the two international terminals.
In November 2024, eight eRTG cranes were delivered and installed at Terminals 3 and 4. Hai Phong Port is actively collaborating with contractors to ensure timely installation in line with the project schedule.
To ensure sufficient manpower, the company has also announced recruitment of workers to work at the two terminals, with an average salary of VND23 million ($904) per month.
