Vietnam has many things to share with the world: UN General Assembly president

Vietnam can share its achievements in poverty reduction and country development with the world, said president of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis.

Vietnam can share its achievements in poverty reduction and country development with the world, said president of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis.

At a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday afternoon (local time), Francis said that sharing will help promote cooperation in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), responding to climate change, and ensuring food security.

Appreciating Vietnam's active, dynamic role and increasing position in the world, including its engagement in UN peacekeeping missions, the UN leader agreed to cooperate with the country to uphold compliance with the UN Charter, international law, and multilateralism.

For his part, PM Chinh affirmed that Vietnam values and supports the central role of the UN in the global governance system in response to today's enormous common challenges.

"Vietnam is committed to contribute positively to the major priorities of the 78th UN General Assembly, including consolidating peace through enhancing trust, promoting cooperation, reducing tensions between major countries, while boosting solidarity, multilateralism, and the reform of international financial institutions towards more equality," he said.

Chinh also affirmed Vietnam’s determination to realize the SDGs for the benefit of the people while leaving no one behind.

"Vietnam supports and is determined to implement the SDGs and respond to climate change, including efforts to implement commitments to net zero emissions by 2050," he stressed.

The Prime Minister said that Vietnam has just passed its National Power Development Plan (PDP VIII) with strong commitments to sustainable energy development, and will soon announce a plan to mobilize resources for the realization of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

PM Pham Minh Chinh is in the U.S. on a week-long visit. Earlier, he joined other world leaders at the Climate Ambition Summit and the UN High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response in New York, part of the 78th UN General Assembly.

On September 18, he attended the Vietnam-U.S. Business Forum in San Francisco during which he once again called on American companies to invest in Vietnam with a focus on high technology in order to realize the U.S. commitment to a strong, independent, resilient and prosperous Vietnam.
