Oracle’s commitment is the latest major investment by a major U.S. tech giant in Southeast Asia - a region that is rapidly becoming a hub for cloud services due to its abundant land, government support and rapidly growing market.

Alphabet Inc, Google’s parent company, said on September 30 that it aimed to invest $1 billion to build data centers in Thailand, in addition to similar projects for Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Amazon.com Inc. unveiled $9 billion-plan in Singapore in May this year. Microsoft Corp. has also mulled over about $4 billion to build data centers and other infrastructure for the region.

Oracle is expanding its cloud infrastructure business globally to compete for a share of the AI sector. However, the company did not provide a time frame or specific details about what it plans to build in Malaysia.

The market for AI-related products could reach $990 billion by 2027, according to consulting firm Bain & Company, in the context that the application of this technology is disrupting the operations of companies and economies
