The south-central province of Phu Yen has approved in principle a high-tech livestock project worth VND794 billion ($32 million), supplying the market about 300,000-350,000 piglets a year.

The 60-hectare facility in Son Thanh Dong commune, Tay Hoa district, to be invested by Quang Minh Investment Development Husbandry Technology JSC, will also supply 15,000 sow pigs.

It includes pig barns, bran warehouses, a waste treatment area, offices, a rest and administrative area.

The investor is requested to complete procedures and bring the project into operation in 21 months from October 20, 2022.

The project, equipped with modern technology, aims to meet Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGap) standards.

Vietnam’s pork output reached 1.12 million tons in the third quarter of the year, totalling 3.23 million tons in the first nine months, up 6% and 4.8% year-on-year respectively, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The pork market, the biggest portion of Vietnam's F&B sector, was valued at $10 billion in 2019 and $15 billion in 2021, according to Masan MEATLife, one of the biggest agricultural firms in the country.

The sector has attracted investments from giant players recently. In September, Thaiholdings JSC, a Hanoi-headquartered multi-sector investment company, invested VND600 billion ($25.57 million) in two pig farms in the central province of Thanh Hoa.

In the same month, the World Bank’s investment arm IFC pumped $52 million into Mavin Group in Vietnam to support the corporation in expanding sustainable pig farming. The investment is part of its African Swine Fever (ASF) Regional Recovery Program, IFC said, noting that Mavin was considered Vietnam’s largest producer of veterinary products with 400 distributors nationwide.

On September 21, BaF Vietnam Agriculture JSC held the groundbreaking ceremony for four high-tech pig farming complexes in the southern province of Tay Ninh. Once operational in the fourth quarter of 2023, the four facilities can raise BaF’s pig output to 1.5 million heads in 2023.
