Small businesses in logistics should look to use existing tools, software and technology solutions effectively, says Dinh Thanh Son, deputy CEO of Viettel Post.

Speaking at a logistics conference in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday, he said digital transformation begins with a shift in mindset and other aspects of operations must also evolve.

Viettel Post applies Internet of Things (IoT) throughout its processes and has incorporated robots for sorting, resulting in a productivity increase of 20-30%, he added.

“Robots work very hard, day and night, without getting tired and without arguing,” he remarked, humorously.

While digital transformation will not yield immediate results, it will make performance metrics clearer across various stages, Son said.

Advising Vietnamese SMEs on digital transformation, Son phasized the importance of leveraging available tools and software. If businesses excel in using what’s at hand, they will achieve positive outcomes, he noted.

Eric Herding, managing director of DSV Air & Sea Vietnam, highlighted three key factors for successful digitalization: professional IT staff, smooth communication between IT and the business departments, and correct data. Incorrect data would turn digital transformation into a disaster.

Cao Hong Phong, deputy general director of Gemalink Port, said the facililty in the Cai Mep-Thi Vai area played a vital role in connecting trade between Vietnam and major markets, including the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Given the trend of investments shifting to Vietnam, Gemalink was finalizing procedures to soon begin construction of phase 2A, expected to be operational by 2026.

In its attempt the ensure sustainable development, his company has targeted building a smart and green port-logistics ecosystem, aligning with global industry trends, Phong said.

“We recognize that if we don’t implement this soon, we risk being left out of the game,” he added.

Elaborating on Gemadept's experience, Phong mentioned the establishment of an ESG (environmental, social, and governance) committee, which conducts annual greenhouse gas emissions inventories at its ports.

The company was creating a roadmap for emissions reduction, developing green ports, and investing in modern, environmentally friendly equipment.

Gemadept has also switched from diesel to electric power, increased its use of renewable energy, launched the Seed for Sea reforestation initiative in Vinh Long province, and signed a sustainable credit agreement with HSBC.

This marked another green milestone in Gemadept’s development plan and its approach to accessing green capital, he added.
