Vietnam remained the biggest manufacturer of sportswear giant Nike in fiscal year 2022, and the second-largest for Adidas and Puma in calendar year 2022, according to company reports.

Nike

For fiscal year 2022, Vietnam manufactured 44% and 26% of Nike footwear and apparel products, respectively. Indonesia and China were two other major footwear producers with 30% and 20%, respectively. Regarding apparel, China and Cambodia manufactured 20% and 16%, respectively.

Nevertheless, Vietnam’s figures for Nike footwear production fell from 51% of the total in fiscal year 2021 and 50% in fiscal year 2020. Apparel product also dropped from 30% in fiscal year 2021 and 28% in fiscal year 2020

Nike attributed the decrease to the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in factory shutdowns of nearly three months in Indonesia and Vietnam.

Adidas

Adidas’s output in 2022 included 419 million pairs of shoes, 482 million apparel products, and 117 million accessories and gear. The figures were an improvement from 340 million pairs of shoes, 482 million apparel products, and 116 million accessories and gear in 2021.

Vietnam accounted for 32% of Adidas footwear and 17% of apparel products last year, the second highest around the world. The country accounted for 30% and 15% of the two categories in 2021, respectively.

Adidas’s top footwear producer in 2022 was Indonesia with 34%, while Cambodia was the largest for apparel with 22%.

Puma

Last year, China became the biggest production hub for Puma with 32% of the total, surpassing Vietnam with 30%. Other major producers were Cambodia with 13%, Bangladesh with 12%, Indonesia with 4%, and India with 3%.

Puma attributed the decrease in Vietnam to the Covid-19 pandemic. China compensated for the lockdown in Vietnam in summer 2021 and continued its momentum to rise above Vietnam in 2022.

In 2022, Vietnam earned $27 billion from exporting footwear, the second-highest figure in the world, accounting for 9.9% of the total, according to Vietnam's Leather and Shoes Research Institute.

The country earned $4.31 billion from exporting footwear in the first quarter of this year, down 18.6% year-on-year, the General Statistics Office reported. The figure included $1.55 billion in March, down 22.9% year-on-year.
