Vietnam saves power as EVN backs Earth Hour 2026 campaign

Vietnam has saved significant electricity as state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) stepped up nationwide efforts to promote energy efficiency, including this year’s Earth Hour campaign, amid growing concerns over energy security.

The campaign, launched by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in coordination with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), saw participation across 34 provinces and cities, with EVN playing a key role in organizing awareness and outreach activities.

Earth Hour, a global initiative first held in 2007, now spans nearly 200 countries and territories. Vietnam marked its 18th year of participation in 2026.

According to data from the National System and Market Operation Company (NSMO), the country saved about 463,000 kWh of electricity during the one-hour lights-off period from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 28, equivalent to roughly VND1.02 billion dong ($38,720).

The campaign comes as global geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions in key energy-producing regions continue to push up prices for oil, gas and coal, posing challenges for energy-importing countries like Vietnam.

Authorities said improving energy efficiency is a key solution to mitigating supply risks, reducing production costs and enhancing economic competitiveness, while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

Under the theme “Green Innovation – Green Future”, EVN and its subsidiaries expanded communication efforts through digital platforms, social media and customer applications, alongside community-level engagement to encourage energy-saving habits.

The utility also urged businesses, organizations and households to switch off non-essential electrical devices during the campaign hour.

Officials said the results highlight the growing impact of Earth Hour in Vietnam, with the initiative increasingly translating awareness into concrete behavioural changes among consumers.

EVN said it would continue to promote efficient electricity use as part of broader efforts to safeguard national energy security and support sustainable development.
