Vietnam to take on Indonesia, Thailand vs Malaysia in AFF Cup semifinals
Vietnam beat Myanmar 3-0 in Hanoi Tuesday to enter the Southeast Asian championship’s semifinals, playing tough rivals Indonesia in Jakarta on Friday.
Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo and his team, right after the win that put them on top of AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022’s Group B, left Hanoi for Ho Chi Minh City where they continued to fly to Jakarta.
Park’s side brought to Vietnamese fans an exciting victory against Myanmar though they needed just a point at My Dinh National Stadium to be among the last four teams.
Pham Tuan Hai, Nguyen Tien Linh, and substitute Chau Ngoc Quang were the authors of the Vietnamese side’s goals. The Golden Star Warriors pocketed 10 points after the group stage.
The Golden Stars began their campaign with convincing 6-0 and 3-0 wins over Laos and Malaysia, respectively, but coach Park’s side were held goalless away in Singapore in their third game. Vietnam’s net is still clean after the four matches.
The Group B winners will play Group A runners-up Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta Friday in the first leg, while defending champions Thailand will take on Group B runners-up Malaysia one day later in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia secured their ticket to the knockout rounds with nine points after beating Singapore 4-1 in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday.
The semifinals’ second-leg games will be played on January 9 and 10 between Vietnam and Indonesia, then Thailand against Malaysia.
Vietnam have won the regional tournament twice, in 2008 and 2018. Park Hang-seo will no longer be the national head coach after AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 due to the completion of his contract, with no more renewal.
