Vietnam vehicle sales drop to 17,314 in Jan

The total sales of Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA) members, which do not include VinFast and Hyundai, plunged 44% year-on-year to 17,314 in January, amid the Lunar New Year holiday.

They included 14,036 passenger cars, down 44% year-on-year; 3,174 commercial vehicles, down 39%; and 104 special-purpose vehicles, down 64%.

The number of completely knocked down vehicles hit 8,086, down 56% year-on-year; and that of completely-built-up units fell 25% to 9,228.

The Lunar New Year holiday (Tet) this year fell in January and lasted for 8-10 days, while last year it took place in February.

Hyundai reported sales of 3,496 units in January. VinFast delivered 358 electric vehicles in the month, including 204 VF 8, a SUV; and 154 VF e34, a crossover. Both are not VAMA members.

Hyundai was the best-selling brand in January. Other top ones in the country were Toyota with 3,023; Ford with 2,360; KIA with 2,075; Mazda with 1,679; and Honda with 1,494.

B-class sedan Hyundai Accent was the best-selling model last month with 1,024 units, followed by Ford Ranger pickup truck with 958; Toyota Cross, a SUV, with 867; Ford Everest, a SUV, with 770; Honda CITY, a sedan, with 759; and Mitsubishi Xpander with 713, including 653 CBU and 60 CKD units.
