Vietnam’s 2024 unemployment rate inches down to 2.24%
Vietnam’s unemployment rate was 2.24% in 2024, down 0.04 percentage points from 2023, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
The GSO estimated the jobless rate at 2.53% and 2.05% in urban and rural areas, respectively.
The unemployment rate among people aged between 15 and 24 stood at 7.83%, a 0.3-percentage-point increase from 2023.

At the end of 2024, the country’s workforce aged 15 and above was 53 million people, up 575,400 year-on-year. This includes 28.25 million males and 24.69 million females, up 383,500 and 191,900 year-on-year, respectively.
The number of employed people aged 15 and above is estimated at 51.9 million in 2024, up 585,100, or 1.1%, from 2023.
The service sector accounted for the lion’s share of the nation’s workforce with 20.8 million employed workers (40.1%, up 497,800 year-on-year), followed by industry-construction with 17.4 million (33.4%, up 167,000), and agriculture-forestry-fisheries with 13.7 million (26.5%, down 79,700).
The number of underemployed people declined by 74,400 year-on-year to 846,800 in 2024.
The 2024 average monthly income of contracted workers was VND7.7 million ($304), up VND610,000 ($24) year-on-year.
The average monthly income of Vietnamese male and female workers with labor contracts was VND8.7 million ($343) and 6.5 million ($256), respectively; with corresponding figures for urban and rural areas at VND9.3 million ($366.4) and VND6.7 million ($264), the GSO report says.
Vietnam’s population was estimated at 101.3 million in 2024, up 1.03% year-on-year.
