Vietnam’s first LNG-fired power plant connects to national grid
Nhon Trach 3, part of Vietnam’s first LNG-fired power project Nhon Trach 3 & 4, connected to the national grid on Wednesday noon, according to project investor PV Power.
Initially, the connected capacity was 50 MW, marking a milestone of LNG-fired power in Vietnam, PV Power highlighted. The move can help Nhon Trach 3 meet the deadline of reaching commercial operation from July 2025.
Nhon Trach 4 is scheduled to conduct “first-fire” in April 2025 and then enter commercial operation from October 2025.
Once fully operational, the 1,600 MW Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 project in the southern province of Dong Nai can provide nine billion kWh of electricity to the national grid annually.
The $1.4 billion project is expected to help ensure energy security for Dong Nai province, an industrial hub in southern Vietnam and the fourth-biggest energy consumer among cities and provinces in Vietnam.
According to the power development plan VIII (PDP VIII), Vietnam aims to reach a capacity of 22,400 MW from LNG-fired power in 2030, supplying 83.5 billion kWh yearly.
LNG Thi Vai terminal in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau is the main LNG source for Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 complex.
