Vietnam’s newly-elected National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man has been appointed by the legislature as National Defense and Security Council member.

According to the Constitution, the State President, who commands the people's armed forces, holds the position of Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.

Currently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is Vice Chairman of the council. Its members include Minister of National Defense General Phan Van Giang and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son.

The Constitution also stipulates that the National Defense and Security Council submits to the National Assembly to decide on a state of war; mobilize all forces and capabilities of the country to protect the Fatherland; carry out special tasks and powers assigned by the legislature in case of war; and decide on the participation of the people's armed forces in activities that contribute to protecting peace in the region and the world.

With "yes" votes from 475 attending delegates, or 97.54% of the total, the National Assembly on Monday passed a resolution on Man’s election as Chairman of the legislature for the 2021-2026 tenure, following the Party Central Committee's nomination last Saturday.

The nomination followed the resignation of Vuong Dinh Hue on May 2.

Man, 62, from Hau Giang province, holds a doctorate in economics. He is a Party Central Committee member for the 11th-13th tenures, Secretary of the 12th Party Central Committee, a member of the 13th Politburo - the country's highest decision-making body, and a National Assembly member for the 13th-15th terms.

Before being elected Vice Chairman of the National Assembly in April 2021, Man was Chairman of the Can Tho city People's Committee, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee, and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

On May 2, as Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, Man was tasked with running the parliament until related personnel issues were settled, after Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue was dismissed from his position.

On the same day, General To Lam, a Politburo member, was elected by the National Assembly as the country's State President.
