Vietnam's top telco Viettel, Canada's Telesat seek satellite cooperation to boost 5G connectivity
Military-run Viettel, Vietnam’s largest telecom and technology group, plans to collaborate with Canada's satellite communications company Telesat in satellite communications, aiming to strengthen 5G connectivity and accelerate digital transformation initiatives.

According to Viettel's Wednesday release, the two sides had a meeting last Thursday to discuss their cooperation, focusing on satellite-based connectivity and emerging digital technologies.
Viettel's deputy CEO Dao Xuan Vu said Viettel is currently rolling out 5G services inside and outside Vietnam. As a result, the group seeks to learn from Telesat’s experience in satellite connectivity to enhance network resilience, ensure stable coverage in remote areas, and support sustainable network development.
Representing the Canadian delegation, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Jim Nickel expressed readiness to share expertise of strength, such as energy solutions supporting the green transition, information and communications technology, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital applications to modernize operations and improve efficiency.
The Canadian delegation also invited Viettel to participate in an event scheduled for May 2026 in Canada, focusing on defense technology, cybersecurity, AI, and military telecommunications applications.
Viettel reported a 4.5% year-on-year rise in pre-tax profit to VND56.8 trillion ($2.16 billion) in 2025, supported by strong growth in overseas markets.
Last week, the firm broke ground on Vietnam’s first semiconductor fabrication plant, marking a significant step in the country’s push to build domestic chipmaking capabilities and move up the global semiconductor value chain.
