VN-Index falls for second session, liquidity shrinks

The Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) on Friday saw its index drop for the second session with trading value plunging 27% from the previous session to VND12.6 trillion ($534.35 million).

The Vietnamese major bourse's VN-Index lost 5.21 points, or 0.46%, to close at 1,120.18, with more than 617 million shares changing hands. There were 167 tickers gaining, 68 going flat, and 249 losing on the major bourse.

The VN30 index, which tracks the performance of 30 largest-cap stocks, went down 2.16 points to 1,123.13, with 19 losers and nine gainers.

The banking group showed poor performance as almost all blue chips declined. VCB of Vietcombank went down 1.86%, BID of BIDV 2.58%, CTG of Vietinbank 1.34%, VPB of VPBank 0.25%, TCB of Techcombank 0.92%, and MBB of MBBank 0.49%.

However, some mid-cap stocks were in the green, namely ACB of Asia Commercial Bank, HDB of HDBank, STB of Sacombank, and EIB of Eximbank.

Securities stocks recovered slightly after a deep drop in the previous session, with SSI of Saigon Securities expanding 1.38%, VND of VNDirect Securities 0.53%, VCI of Viet Capital Securities 0.83%, HCM of Ho Chi Minh City Securities 0.54%, VIX of VIX Securities 0.93%, and FTS of FPT Securities 0.87%.

Meanwhile, a divergence was seen in real estate, manufacturing, energy, and aviation groups.

Tickers of retail firms saw good performance with MWG of Mobile World Investment Corp. expanding 1.41% and FRT of FPT Retail hitting its ceiling price.

Foreign investors were net purchasers on the HoSE for the third session to the tune of about VND388 billion ($16.45 million), over 2.3 times higher than the previous session. They most net purchased HPG of steel maker Hoa Phat, VHM of real estate developer Vinhomes, and SSI of Saigon Securities.

The HNX-Index on the Hanoi bourse went down 0.16 points to 227.32, while the UpCOM-Index on the unlisted public company market rose 0.37 points to 86.
