The $1.6 billion project of U.S.-headquartered semiconductor giant Amkor Technology in Vietnam is set to have a labor demand of 2,800 during stable operations, according to a recent project report.

The figure is lower than the 10,000-figure Amkor mentioned during the factory inauguration in October 2023. The current workforce of Amkor at its Vietnam factory in the northern province of Bac Ninh is 1,190.

The project has an initial investment capital of $529.6 million. In July, Amkor received a certificate for additional investments of $1.07 billion. This is 11 years earlier than its original plan of investing $1.6 billion by 2035.

The factory has two phases with an annual output of 600 million and 1.2 billion items, equivalent to 210 tons and 420 tons, respectively.

Its first phase is now operational at 70% of its annual capacity. The second phase is installing machines, towards full operations from September 2025.

Amkor estimates that its electricity demand is 4.51 million kWh a month at the moment and can go up to 15 million kWh during stable operations.

The company is seeking permission to upgrade its capacity to 100% of the first phase and 25% of the second phase, equivalent to 900 million items or 315 tons.
