Amkor Technology, a U.S.-headquartered semiconductor firm, sees Vietnam a strong market in the mid and long term despite tariff uncertainties under the Trump administration, said an executive.

“Currently, we don’t foresee that we will significantly change our CapEx plan, although we remain flexible as much as possible if we observe unexpected events later in the year where we then can push out certain investments,” Giel Rutten, president and CEO at Amkor said at the Q1/2025 earnings conference call on April 28.

Most of its investments are for fungible equipment, and Amkor invests in expansion of its test capability and capacity, the CEO added.

To date, Amkor Technology has invested $1.6 billion in Vietnam through a semiconductor manufacturing plant in the northern province of Bac Ninh.

According to a report in February, Amkor is seeking permission to triple the maximum annual capacity of its Bac Ninh plant from 1.2 billion to 3.6 billion items. It aims to simultaneously conduct partial operation and plant expansion from September, towards stable operation from October.

The Bac Ninh factory is currently producing 420 million items a year, equivalent to 147 tons. It is employing 1,200 people and can increase the figure to 5,700 during stable operation.

Amkor Technology held a grand opening for its factory in Bac Ninh province in October 2023. The factory, covering 57 acres (23.1 hectares) at the Yen Phong 2C Industrial Park, offers turnkey solutions from design to electrical testing, beginning with Advanced System in Package (SiP) and memory production.

The project has an initial investment capital of $529.6 million. In July 2024, Amkor received a certificate for additional investments of $1.07 billion. This is 11 years earlier than its original plan of investing $1.6 billion by 2035.

Amkor started official operation in Vietnam in Q3/2024 and earned an export revenue of VND337.5 billion ($13.3 million) last year. In 2024, Amkor Technology paid taxes of $3.5 million, the firm added.
