CS Wind Vietnam, a unit of South Korea’s CS Wind Corporation, has held a ceremony for delivery of first wind turbines from its factory in Vietnam’s southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau to South Korea’s southwestern province of Jeonnam.

The 10 made-in-Vietnam turbines, with a total capacity of 10 MW, are set for delivery to the 99-MW Jeonnam 1 project offshore Jeonnam province in late April. The project is scheduled to enter operation later this year, powering 60,000 South Korean households.

The turbines are part of a supply contract conducted by CS Wind for Spain-based Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy serving the Jeonnam 1 project.

The Jeonnam 1 project is a cooperation between SK E&S, under South Korean chaebol SK, and Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). It is expected to become the first South Korean commercial scale offshore wind farm.

Stuart Livesey, CEO of Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) - a partner of CIP, said at the event that Vietnam has many advantages in developing its supply chain for offshore wind power projects.

Vietnam has the potential to become a hub of exporting turbine foundations, turbine towers, offshore transformer stations and other components serving offshore wind power projects in the region, he added.

In March 2024, CS Wind Vietnam inaugurated an $80 million offshore wind tower factory in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. Covering 24 hectares, the facility's output of wind towers can reach 360,000 tons a year, making it the largest in Southeast Asia. Besides, the facility plans to expand the size of the towers it produces from 7.5 to 10 meters.

The inaugural ceremony marked 20 years of CS Wind’s Vietnam factory, which opened on the last day of 2003 and was also CS Wind’s first overseas factory. The plant mainly provides towers for the Southern Pacific, Asian, and U.S. markets.
