Dong Nai province asks foreign pig breeders to stop working with 300 farms

Dong Nai province has asked four foreign pig breeders - C.P., Japfa Comfeed, CJ and Sunjin - to stop cooperation with 300 plus farms without environmental certificates and other licenses.

The southern province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment has asked South Korea-invested CJ Vina Agri to stop collaboration with 250 farms, Thailand-invested C.P. Vietnam with 46 farms, South Korea-invested Sunjin Vina with 19 farms, and Indonesia-invested Japfa Comfeed Vietnam with 13 farms.

The environment department has asked that the foreign firms resume collaboration only after the farms have received environmental certificates and other licenses from provincial authorities.

The firms should terminate their cooperation with those farms that fail to meet required standards to obtain licenses, the department has said. It has asked the four businesses to report on follow-up action taken by the end of this month.

Dong Nai is a major pig-farming hub in Vietnam. In the first half of 2023, the country’s total output of pork reached 2.33 million tons, up 6.5% year-on-year, according to the General Statistics Office. Meanwhile, Dong Nai data shows the province’s output was 242,111 tons, up 3.58%; or 10.4% of the country’s total.

Pork is the most popular meat in Vietnam, followed by poultry (1.04 million tons - not including 9.1 billion eggs), beef (245,300 tons), and buffalo meat (61,200 tons).
