Ericsson ready to set up R&D center in Vietnam
Swedish telco Ericsson is ready to cooperate to develop a research & development center in Vietnam to leverage the country's skilled workforce and growing digital economy.
Such an R&D center will create new solutions that can be exported, president and CEO of Ericsson Borje Ekholm said at a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on Monday.
The CEO stressed the importance of the Vietnamese market, with vast potential, to Ericsson. He himself has visited Vietnam multiple times, and this is his second trip to the country this year.
With the commercialization of 5G service in Vietnam in a short time, Ekholm believed that Vietnam is on the right track and will be a leading country in digital economy and cutting-edge technologies.
Ekholm’s vision aligns with PM’s suggestions made at the meeting, where he spoke highly of Ericsson's business plans in Vietnam, especially in providing solutions to digital infrastructure development in the country, promoting national digital transformation, and building the e-government.
He called on Ericsson to boost cooperation with Vietnam in a strategic manner, focusing on building R&D and data centers, promoting technology transfer, digital infrastructure development, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, Internet of Things, and next-generation networks like 5G and 6G.
As Vietnam seeks to exploit outer space, underground space, and marine space, promoting innovation and integration, Chinh suggested Ericsson develop satellite internet, strengthen cooperation in workforce training, experience sharing, and policy consultation, and help Vietnamese companies join global supply chains.
Present in Vietnam since 1993, Ericsson has been a major partner to Vietnamese telecom operators such as VNPT, Viettel, and MobiFone. It has been deeply involved in Vietnam's 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G network development.
As of the second quarter of 2024, the Swedish company has around 400 employees in Vietnam.
