Gojek has embraced the trend of delivery service using electric motorbikes in Vietnam as the Indonesia-based platform launched a partnership with Vietnamese startup Dat Bike on Thursday.

Through the collaboration, electric motorbike maker Dat Bike can expand the presence of its eco-friendly vehicles, while Gojek can go greener.

The two sides will deploy Dat Bike’s Weaver ++ models in Ho Chi Minh City initially. With a range of up to 200 kilometers and a quick 3-hour full charge, the Weaver++ is capable of assisting drivers in their jobs.

The Vietnamese e-bike market is flourishing, with the emergence of domestic makers like VinFast, Datbike, Arevo, and Pega, as well as foreign brands including Yadea, Dibao, and MBigo.

Dat Bike

In November 2022, Dat Bike raised $8 million in a funding round led by Jungle Ventures with participation from GSR Ventures, Delivery Hero Ventures, Wavemaker Partners and Innoven Capital, bringing the Ho Chi Minh City-based manufacturer’s total raised capital to $16.5 million since its establishment in 2019.

In August 2022, Dat Bike launched its first super-fast charging station, called Dat Charge. A trip of 100 kilometers requires a 20-minute charge, and 150 kilometers, a 30-minute charge, the highest charging speed recorded in Vietnam.

VinFast

In September 2022, Vietnamese automaker VinFast and delivery service Ahamove teamed up to launch AhaFast, a technology-based delivery service on electric scooters. Both sides have signed an agreement under which VinFast will provide electric vehicles for Ahamove to operate the delivery service.

Ahamove plans to utilize 10,000 electric scooters from 2025 onwards in a bid to eventually replace petrol-powered and other two-wheelers that don’t meet quality standards and pollute the environment. Initially, the service operates in the central city of Danang with 100 electric scooters and then expands to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Nha Trang and other locations.

In March, GSM (Green-Smart-Mobility) JSC, the electric car and motorbike rental and taxi service arm under private conglomerate Vingroup, and ride-hailer Be Group partnered up to utilize electric vehicles in ride-hailing service.

Per the agreement, GSM will invest in Be Group to help the latter grow into a multi-service platform, support Be Group drivers to switch to electric vehicles conveniently, and improve service quality. Initially, GSM will collaborate with VPBank to offer exclusive packages for Be Group drivers to purchase or hire electric vehicles with suitable costs.

Selex Motors

Selex Motors, a Vietnamese startup, launched its electric motorbike delivery system in November 2022, the first in Southeast Asia with optimization for business-to-business (B2B) transport services. "As a result, electric motorbikes would become inevitable in Vietnam; however, the market struggles with issues like prolonged battery charging and underdeveloped charging facilities," said Selex Motors CEO Nguyen Huu Phuoc Nguyen.

In December 2022, Selex Motors delivered the first 100 electric motorbikes to Lazada Logistics, the delivery service of e-commerce platform Lazada. Selex Camel – a vehicle designed specifically for transport by Selex Motors – is introduced as “the first electric pickup truck model in Southeast Asia,” according to Selex Motors.

This April, Selex Motors enlarged its service via a partnership with South Korea-backed Baemin, a competitor of Gojek. In the pilot run, drivers of Baemin will use Selex Camel for the delivery service. Baemin expects the partnership would help drivers optimize the operational costs thanks to quick battery changes and non-smoke and non-noise services.
