Intel vows to add more Vietnam firms to its ecosystem: vice president
Intel strives to add more Vietnamese firms to its ecosystem, said Sarah Kemp, vice president of international government affairs while meeting Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Truong Thanh Hoai.
Kemp also highlighted Intel’s initiatives to reduce energy usage at its factory in Vietnam, while making suggestions for Vietnamese authorities to facilitate its activities in the country, according to a Tuesday release of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
For his part, Hoai lauded Intel’s investments in Vietnam, which has consequently attracted investors into the country's semiconductor sector. The ministry will back Intel’s suggestions to help the chip maker meet its international commitments.
He suggested Intel further utilize investment incentives for high-tech businesses in Vietnam.
Intel has so far invested $1.5 billion in Vietnam. The Intel Vietnam factory accounts for 50% of packaging and testing tasks for the giant's global operations.
In November 2023, Reuters reported that Intel had called off its planned investment expansion in Vietnam, which would have doubled the tech giant’s operations in the country. “Vietnam will continue to be a critical part of our global manufacturing operations as demand for semiconductors grows,” Intel told Reuters.
Intel Vietnam representative Phung Viet Thang said in March that the company "appreciates continued support of the Vietnamese government and is committed to long-term investments in Vietnam."
Vietnam currently has no semiconductor fabrication plant, while several chip giants like Intel, Amkor Technology, and Hana Micron have operational packaging and testing (APT) factories here.
