Japan retailer Aeon starts building 9.1 hectare mall in northern Vietnam
Aeon Mall Vietnam, under Japanese retail giant Aeon Mall, on Monday kicked off the construction of Aeon Mall Ha Long in Ha Long town, Quang Ninh province, the firm said in a statement.
The mall, with a land area of 9.1 hectares and the total floor area of 13 hectares, is set to open in the second half of 2026.
Aeon Mall highlighted the province’s advantages, including Ha Long’s attraction to tourists and high economic growth thanks to domestic and foreign investments. Ha Long town is home to Halong Bay, a UNESCO natural heritage site.

The ceremony followed an agreement signed between Aeon Mall Vietnam and local business Viet Phat Group JSC in January 2024. With an investment of VND5,200 billion ($214 million), the facility is designed to serve 10 million customers a year and employ 2,500 staff.
Aeon Mall reported an operating income of JPY3,434 million ($21.8 million) in Vietnam in March-November 2024 (first three quarters of fiscal year 2024), up 19.3% year-on-year.
According to the Japanese retailer’s report for the nine-month period, the operating income in Vietnam was the highest in the ASEAN region and the third-highest in the world.
To date, there are seven Aeon outlets in Vietnam: two each in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; and one each in the southern province of Binh Duong, the northern city of Hai Phong and the central city of Hue. Of these, the latest to open is in Hue.
So far, Aeon has invested over $1.5 billion in Vietnam. Vietnam is Aeon's second most important market, after Japan, said Kazaoka Takao, chief merchandizing officer at Aeon Vietnam.
