Urgent power transmission project inspected to ensure stable supply for Tan Son Nhat Airport
A working delegation recently inspected the 220kV Tan Son Nhat-Thuan An transmission line project, which powers the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
The delegation included leaders from the Office of the State Steering Committee for National and Energy Sector Key Programs and Projects and Vietnam Electricity's (EVN) National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT).
Hoang Trong Hieu, deputy chief of the steering committee, and Pham Le Phu, general director of EVNNPT, along with representatives from EVNNPT’s departments, the Southern Power Project Management Board (SPMB), and consulting units joined the delegation.

This project was assigned to EVNNPT as investor under the Prime Minister's Decision No. 888/QĐ-TTg dated May 9, 2025, with SPMB acting on behalf of the investor to manage and oversee the project.
The 220kV transmission line includes 7.8 km of underground double-circuit cable and 5.4 km of overhead line.
At the newly constructed 220kV Tan Son Nhat substation, two 220kV feeders connecting to the 220kV Thuan An substation will be invested as part of the Tan Son Nhat 220kV substation project, developed by Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation.
At the existing 220kV Thuan An substation, two new 220kV feeders to connect to Tan Son Nhat will be built. The system will also be equipped with modern control, measurement, protection, communication, and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems in compliance with current standards and regulations.
Once completed, the project will strengthen the 220kV transmission grid linkage across HCMC’s areas, and improve investment efficiency and facilitate power transfer between areas.
It will ensure stable and uninterrupted power supply to the HCMC load center, particularly to the 220kV Tan Son Nhat substation, which powers Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
It will also reduce load on existing 220kV lines such as Cau Bong-Hoc Mon, Thu Duc-Cat Lai, and Thu Duc-Nhon Trach; while enhancing the safety, flexibility, and stability of the national power system.
During the inspection, the leaders of the Steering Committee Office, EVNNPT, and the working group reviewed landmark positions, underground cable construction areas, and gave immediate instructions to consultants and relevant units to resolve issues that could delay the project.
To meet the completion timeline set by the Prime Minister, they directed SPMB to work closely with local authorities and stakeholders to accelerate procedures for land compensation, support, resettlement, and land handover to contractors.
EVNNPT also requested the consulting units to recheck field landmarks and maintain close on-site coordination to promptly address any arising issues without affecting the project’s schedule.
At the inspection, SPMB proposed the steering committee urge the HCMC People’s Committee to issue official land recovery notices to residents, complete land inventory and valuation by July 2025, allow EVNNPT and SPMB to complete cadastral mapping, and expedite the land clearance and compensation process, facilitating site handover by July 2025 so that construction can begin on schedule.
Hoang Trong Hieu, deputy chief of the steering committee, emphasized that this is a critical and urgent project to ensure stable power supply for Tan Son Nhat Airport and for HCMC at large. He confirmed that the Steering Committee will work with HCMC authorities to accelerate land handover and support project implementation.
