Vietnam’s southernmost province eyes exporting electricity to Singapore
Vietnam’s southernmost province of Ca Mau aims to build a grid to export electricity to Singapore, provincial authorities suggested at a Monday meeting with Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Jaya Ratnam.
Calling on the Singaporean delegation to support the electricity export project, Nguyen Ho Hai, chief of Ca Mau's Party Committee, said the project can transmit renewable energy from southern Vietnam to Singapore.
He also highlighted Ca Mau’s advantages, including 254 kilometers of coastline and the potential to develop 14,000 MW of wind power and 4,000 MW of solar power for export.

Ca Mau’s location can provide geographical advantages for electricity transmission via underwater cable, he added.
Hai suggested the Singaporean delegation connect Ca Mau with VSIP, the developer of Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) facilities, to build an industrial park in the province. He suggested VSIP invest in the Tac Thu Industrial Park project, located within the province's Nam Can Economic Zone.
So far, VSIP has invested in 18 industrial parks in 13 localities of Vietnam. Those facilities, in turn, have attracted investments of over $21 billion and employed 300,000 people.
Additionally, the two sides discussed further cooperation in trade of agricultural products and seafoods, workforce training, carbon credit.
In October 2023, Singapore's Sembcorp received conditional approval from Singaporean authorities to import 1.2 GW of renewable electricity from Vietnam.
In August 2023, PTSC, a subsidiary of state-owned Petrovietnam, received a permit from Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to carry out wind, marine and geological surveys for the electricity export project. The permit features two locations covering 89,027 hectares and 98,897 hectares off the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
In August 2024, PTSC and Sembcorp awarded wind & metocean measurement services and a geotechnical desktop study for the power export project to PTSC Geos & Subsea Services Co., Ltd (PTSC G&S). The package is a critical component in preparing and implementing an offshore renewable energy import-export project from Vietnam to Singapore.
