English and Chinese are the two most popular languages learnt on Duolingo, a foreign language learning app with over 500 million learners around the globe, in Vietnam.

Ranking third is Vietnamese, particularly for learners 30 or older, indicating that Vietnam is a popular destination for tourists, digital nomads, and business travelers from all over the world, Duolingo said.

Ranked fourth and fifth are Japanese and Korean, respectively, according to its newly-released 2022 Duolingo Language Report.

Amid the influence of South Korean culture in the country, especially among youngsters, Duolingo emphasized that Korean is the third most popular language to study in Vietnam for learners between 13 and 29.

Duolingo noted brain training and cognitive health are the top motivations of new learners in Vietnam across all ages from learners to workers and people at different life stages. The report affirmed the rate of 29% is exceptional, higher than in any other large market, and this pattern is unlike the motivations in any other country.

Other top motivations in Vietnam are school with 24% and family and heritage with 11%. Duolingo pointed out that travel, as a motivation, is low at 9%, indicating that Vietnamese learners are hesitant to prioritize learning new languages just for travel, amid the relaxing of travel restrictions in the post-pandemic era.
