Lego to begin production at Vietnam factory in 2025
Lego’s under-construction factory in Vietnam is scheduled to begin production in 2025, the Danish toy producer said in a statement last week.
According to Lego’s statement about its $1 billion investment in the U.S. state of Virginia, the toy producer noted Preben Elnef, former general manager of Lego Manufacturing Vietnam and vice president of Lego Group, would take the investment leadership in Virginia from April 2024.
Preben Elnef would assume the new role after three years working on Lego’s Vietnam business. In Vietnam, he established an operating unit and oversaw the construction of the Vietnam plant.
“Lego will benefit from Preben Elnef’s experience in establishing a presence in Vietnam and building a second new factory,” said Lego CEO Carsten Rasmussen.
In Vietnam, after announcing a $1 billion investment in December 2021, Lego kicked off factory construction in the southern province of Binh Duong in November 2022. The 44-hectare state-of-the-art factory at the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) is designed to be Lego’s most sustainable facility to date, supporting the toymaker’s ambition to achieve a 37% cut in absolute global carbon emissions by 2032.
The investment is the largest by a Danish company in Vietnam to date and part of the company’s strategy to expand its supply chain network to support long-term growth and locate production facilities close to its major markets.
In September 2023, Lego established a recruitment center in the province, aiming to hire 500 people towards the end of 2024.
In January 2024, Lego reported to Binh Duong authorities that the factory is on track to begin trial production in the second half of 2024.
