State-owned telecom giant MobiFone won Tuesday an auction for the 3,800-3,900 MHz frequency band (C3 band), becoming Vietnam’s third network operator that can use the 5G spectrum.

The other two telcos using the 5G Spectrum are Viettel and Vinaphone.

A MobiFone representative who did not want to be named said securing the C3 band will enable the firm to accelerate commercialization of 5G services nationwide this year. It planned to enhance services in major cities, airports, tourist spots and industrial zones.

It will also implement a model of infrastructure sharing with other telecom operators to optimize resource use, the rep said.

"5G deployment is a key part of MobiFone's development and strategic journey until 2035 as it transitions from a traditional telecom service provider to a leading technology corporation in Vietnam," he added.

MobiFone has carried out 5G testing in many areas across the country, giving it an initial database for evaluating and developing future network expansion plans.

With high speed and lower latency compared to 4G, 5G will be a puzzle piece to complete technology platforms such as Big Data, Cloud and AI, contributing to providing service quality and different experiences in multiple fields and professions, the rep said.

In addition, MobiFone’s goal is to develop 5G networks and acquire a leading position in the Vietnamese market by 2030. It plans to research and develop “Make-in-MobiFone” products in AI/ML, IoT, Big Data, Blockchain and other hi-tech fields.

The MobiFone leadership has said that by 2025, the corporation expects to be among the leaders in digital infrastructure development. The telco will master core technology, attract more new customers and create more new revenue sources alongside achieving strong growth in digital service revenues.

Vietnam has five mobile operators, namely MobiFone, Viettel, Vinaphone, Vietnamobile and Gmobile.
