Nguyen Thi Thanh elected Vietnam parliament vice chairwoman

Nguyen Thi Thanh, head of the National Assembly's Delegate Affairs Committee, has been elected Vice Chairwoman of the parliament for the term 2021-2026.

With 465 "yes" votes from 467 attending delegates, the National Assembly, Vietnam's highest legislative body, on Thursday passed a resolution to elect Thanh.

Nguyen Thi Thanh, 57, comes from Yen Mo district, Ninh Binh province. She has a master's degree in business administration and a bachelor's degree in law.

Thanh is a Party Central Committee member for the 11th (alternate), 12th, and 13th tenures and a National Assembly member for the 13th, 14th and 15th terms.

Since 2005, Thanh has held many positions in Ninh Binh province such as deputy head and then head of the provincial Party Committee's mass mobilization committee; head of the legal department and then head of the social and cultural department under of the provincial People's Council; and chief of Yen Khanh district's Party Committee.

She became chief of Ninh Binh province's Party Committee in August 2013. In April 2020, she was appointed head of the National Assembly's Delegate Affairs Committee and deputy head of the Party Central Committee’s Organization Commission.

On May 20, Tran Thanh Man, a Politburo member and standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, was elected the legislative body's Chairman for the 2021-2026 term.

After electing Thanh, the 15th National Assembly now has four vice chairpeople, including Nguyen Duc Hai, Nguyen Khac Dinh, Tran Quang Phuong, and Nguyen Thi Thanh.
