Official arrested on bribery charges over illegal aquaculture farms
Nguyen Cong Tho, chairman of Cam Trung ward, Cam Pha town, Quang Ninh province, has been detained on charge of accepting bribes to “guard” illegal aquaculture farms on Bai Tu Long Bay, police said on Friday.
The case dates back to the time when Tho served as head of the environment and urban order inspection team in the ward.
In August 2022, forces in Cam Pha town launched a campaign to crack down on illegal aquaculture farming that caused environmental pollution on Bai Tu Long Bay. They have already dismantled 56 aquaculture cages.
Investigators discovered many local officials had turned a blind eye to the violations and transferred the files to the police.

By the end of last September, Cam Pha police had arrested six officers from the environment and urban order inspection team for accepting bribes.
Bai Tu Long Bay is located to the east of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO-recognized world natural heritage site.
