Vietsovpetro, a Vietnam-Russia joint venture in the oil and gas sector, plans to invest in several offshore wind power projects totaling 2,000 MW in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh.

Vietsovpetro wants to collaborate with Power Generation JSC 1 (EVNGENCO 1), a subsidiary under state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN), to conduct the projects, representatives of the two firms said in a statement to Tra Vinh authorities on Thursday.

The meeting took place after the National Power Development Plan for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050 (PDP VIII) was approved in May. The two firms clarified offshore wind power projects as their main target, beyond the six-nautical-mile sea area. An EVNGENCO 1 representative urged the provincial authorities to approve the study of one project towards operation by 2030.

Established in 1981, Vietsovpetro has so far discovered nine oilfields in Vietnam, exploiting 242.7 million tons of crude oil and 37.3 billion cubic meters of gas, gaining a revenue of $84.7 billion, while building 50 sea-based facilities and 800 kilometers of pipelines to link oilfields.

Tra Vinh is now home to the 4,498 MW Duyen Hai power center with various thermal power plants, the 165 MWp Trung Nam Tra Vinh solar power center, and five wind power factories of 322 MW. Besides, the 25-MW Tra Vinh biomass power plant is being built in the southern province.

Tra Vinh’s renewable energy potential is about 46,500 MW, including 33,787 MW of wind power, 7,587 MW of solar power, 5,000 MW of gas-fired power, 110 MW of biomass power, and others, according to Tra Vinh’s sea-based economy development plan for 2021-2025, with a vison to 2045.
