Provincial authorities and three developers - Korea Electric Power Corp. (Kepco), Marubeni and Tohoku Electric Power - plan to inaugurate the 1,200MW plant on September 2, Vietnam’s National Day.

Kepco contributed half of the project investment, while the figure for Japanese companies Marubeni and Tohoku is 40% and 10%, respectively.

Construction of the project in Nghi Son Economic Zone, which is also home to the $9-billion Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical complex, one of Vietnam’s two operational oil refineries, began in 2018.

Its developers had said the power plant would use cutting-edge technologies to ensure productivity and cut coal losses and emissions. As a build-operate-transfer (BOT) project, the plant will be transferred to state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) 25 years after operation.
